Why should I see a Hygienist – doesn’t a dentist do cleans?
Not all practices have a dental hygienist. However, more of them now offer this as part of the service to patients, using part-time and full-time hygienists.
Why doesn’t the dentist do this work?
Some dentists will do this type of work. However, many now realise that the hygienist has been specially trained to carry out scaling and polishing and can spend longer with you. Hygienist will usually spend four times as long cleaning your teeth. This means that you get a more thorough and professional job. A normal appointment with a hygienist lasts about an hour. An hour with the dentist would cost you over $600.
They are also experts in teaching you how to look after your teeth and gums. Often the hygienist will spend a number of appointments getting the gums healthy and ready for the dentist. The dentists can focus on treating decay and dental disease and restoring your damaged or unattractive teeth.
